Block printing in Hangzhou

Playing on the notion of creativity and a blank canvas, this signage concept for Le Meridian Hangzhou began by looking at the history of printing in China, and in particular that of moveable type.

The concept loosely represents a scattered placement of Chinese and English metal block printing letters, pulled together to form a clear and unique visual language. The letter forms are technically ‘cast metal sorts’ that we have re-cast to look like traditional items.

Used as freestanding signs, embedded into the floor or wall-mounted, the blocks also cast a pleasing shadow in relief, when cast in spotlight.

Whilst acting as a reference to tradition, the signage is kept modern through the choice of materials. Brushed champagne brass lettering has been used on a brushed oxidised champagne brass bass resulting in beautiful and tactile blocks.
