AOL

AOL’s first Australian office draws on its rich New York heritage to make a bold visual statement with a refined industrial feel.

AOL, an original internet pioneer, is one of the world’s leading digital media and technology companies with more than 700 million users of its video, mobile, ad technology and content channels.

Property group DEXUS commissioned us to design a versatile display suite that would showcase the opportunity for the part-floor space. When AOL selected this space for its first Australian office, it already had a clear idea of how to express its brand and culture through its physical space.

In a true collaboration, we brought AOL’s distinctive vision to life within modest budget constraints and completed the entire build within a month.

The original design strategy needed to meet DEXUS’ requirements for a broad tenancy application, providing a strong contemporary workspace that any high calibre organisation could adapt for its own requirements. Unispace provided design and construction services to deliver a warm, neutral and inviting design that inspired AOL to commit to a lease.

Following a full design documentation review, AOL then briefed us on its own specifications – including replacing the base building carpet with the existing polished concrete floors and opening the reception area out to create a more relaxed lounge space with bike racks.

In a visual reference to AOL’s New York heritage, a striking floor to ceiling photographic feature wall of the Brooklyn Bridge defines the breakout space – along with a table tennis table and AOL’s signature dark walls.

To maximise the flexibility of the floorplan, many workspaces have a dual purpose. The reception area hosts casual meetings, while the breakfast bench in the breakout space is a useful stand-up work desk.

The result is true to AOL’s dynamic brand and establishes their presence in the Australian market with strong visual statements throughout. It also references the original building materials, including the natural variations of the polished concrete.
