Macmillan Learning develops pioneering, interactive teaching tools and educational content that inspire student curiosity around the world.
We partnered with Macmillan to help transform a disjointed, outdated workplace with exterior offices and lacking in collaborative spaces into a flexible, team-focused environment that allows for expansion and will support business needs well into the future. To accomplish this, we renovated and consolidated their previous 45,000 sqft space spread across two floors, to one 25,000 sqft collaborative workplace.
Macmillan occupies a historic brick structure facing the Boston Public Garden with an imposing existing column grid. The company was intrigued from the start by the juxtaposition of their own rich corporate history and Boston’s educational and cultural legacy.
Our designers chose to highlight the original architecture while nodding to city landmarks such as the swans of the Public Garden and the statehouse’s Gold dome in their choice of finishes and environmental graphics.
We also worked to reorganize Macmillan’s impressive art collection which is now showcased to striking effect through recessed lighting and thoughtful placement.
Our delivery team devised a phased construction schedule that accommodated Macmillan’s need to stay-in-place and allowed work to continue without interruption. To uphold Macmillan’s commitment to sustainability, we reused and refreshed many materials from their old workplace including doors, frames, lighting, bookcases and a myriad of other items refinished.
The result is a sophisticated new environment that facilitates collaboration and inspires staff to fulfill Macmillan’s mission of improving lives through learning.
