Boston Scientific (IAS)
Boston Scientific reimagined its Madrid workplace by introducing a training facility under the Institute for Advancing Science (IAS) to foster collaboration and immersive learning.
Blending Innovation with Continuity
In 2020, Boston Scientific embarked on a transformative journey to redefine its workspace environment, beginning with the design and implementation of its three-floor workplace in Madrid —a strategic shift from traditional cubicles to an agile working model. Building on this success, Boston Scientific has now introduced its Institute for Advancing Science (IAS) suite on the ground floor of their Madrid workplace. Designed as a hub for doctors, clients, and trainees, this innovative space offers an immersive environment where users can effectively learn to utilise Boston Scientific’s products.
Pioneering Innovation and Design Excellence
To ensure a smooth transition between the original workspace and the new suite, the design team maintained key elements from the initial project. The floor finishes and materials were carefully selected to mirror those used in the upper floors, creating visual and tactile consistency throughout the building. This approach ensures that the suite feels like a natural extension of the existing workspace, rather than a disruptive addition.
The Future of Training and Demonstration
Adjacent to the welcome area, the flexible lab rooms are designed for diverse training and demonstrations. Folding partitions allow quick reconfiguration from smaller rooms to larger spaces, while versatile furniture features tables that convert into whiteboards. This adaptability supports various medical training activities, including hands-on practice with anatomical models.
From Relaxation to Collaboration
The Institute for Advancing Science Lounge serves as a multifunctional area that can be used as a cafeteria, lounge, or event space for clients and visitors. It features a large OLED screen for presentations and a long, fully connected lounge bench, allowing clients to work comfortably and enjoy breaks between intensive training sessions or for hosting informal gatherings.
Illuminating Wellbeing
The suite’s lighting design is based on the WELL Light concept, which promotes exposure to light that supports visual, mental, and biological health. Integrated lighting systems are used throughout the space, with colour-changing lights that can be adjusted to suit different events and atmospheres.
Project Success to Guide Upcoming Initiatives
The result is a state-of-the-art facility that builds on a successful agile workplace. The new space offers an unmatched training and client engagement experience, combining sophisticated design with high-tech features.

These vertical displays, showcase dynamic content about Boston Scientific's projects, products, and innovations. A standout feature within this space is the bespoke ceiling installation, comprising over 500 manually installed LED lights arranged to mimic the Milky Way, creating a visually captivating experience as visitors move through the space.
"The level of finish was high and the attention to detail was great. This project fulfilled all our expectations and needs. It is now an inspiration and reference for other projects and companies in our industry."

The auditorium is the centrepiece of the IAS suite, featuring a curved LED digital wall that delivers a fully immersive environment with screens on the floor, walls, and ceiling. Acoustic materials cover the walls and ceiling to enhance sound quality, while the suspended timber acoustic ceiling with integrated LED lighting adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The seating is also flexible, with benches that can be transformed into armchairs, accommodating various audience sizes and event types.
