Downer uses world-leading insights and solutions to design, build and maintain assets, infrastructure and facilities across Australia and New Zealand. By attracting and retaining teams of talented people, it delivers integrated services that sustain the modern environment and meet its customers’ diverse needs.
Downer recognised that their employees needed a creative and inspirational space that fostered collaboration and social connection. With this driving their decision to move to a new premises, they acquired a space which already incorporated some key design features they wanted in their new agile workplace, such as an internal interconnecting staircase.
By retaining a degree of existing built space, our challenge was to integrate Downer’s agreed design concept into a partially fitted-out space and to re-use current furniture. The key to the success of this was continuous communication and collaboration with their teams.
The project was delivered in two phases to minimise disruption to staff. Once the first two floors were complete and the teams moved in, work began on the final three floors to bring the project to completion.
Each employee is assigned a neighbourhood where they have a locker, but they are free to choose any space that best suits the type of task they are doing. Individual workspaces occupy the perimeter of the office, where floor-to ceiling windows provide an abundance of natural light. The internal core of the building is dedicated to quiet focus rooms, meeting rooms and breakout areas, all connected by an internal staircase that spans the five floors.
The main reception is a welcoming and contemporary representation of Downer’s brand. The space is bright and features a wraparound balcony with views over the Brisbane river.
This project has provided Downer’s people the flexible environment they needed to encourage collaboration within and between neighbourhoods.
