When global timber flooring specialists Havwoods moved to a central Sydney location, they asked Unispace to design and develop the concept put together by UK retail designers Brinkworth.
The challenge was to showcase their impressive collection of quality oak timbers in a curated fashion, consistent with the global Havwoods brand, but with a local look and feel. We adapted Brinkworth’s design to comply with Australian standards and incorporated materials and fittings we could source in the tight timeframe. Our solution: keep it minimal and elegant, with careful attention to craft and detail.
At the heart of the space are three oversized, steel-framed tables and polished brass drawers displaying curated, removable timber samples – a format based on Havwoods’ London and Berlin showrooms.
Havwoods envisaged a space where businesses and designers could spend time workshopping their ideas. Here customers can view the entire product selection in its natural horizontal plane and discuss their ideas over a coffee at the in-house bar.
We built a relationship with Brinkworth based on respect for their concept. We proposed local alternatives to their specified furniture from overseas, that were consistent with the Havwoods image, such as chairs and stools from Australian designers Jardan. Floor parquetry flown in from Europe, custom nosing for the stairs, and a feature for the intimate breakout space at the back of the space show off Havwoods carpentry. We kept on track during the fast-paced delivery stage with regular site meetings.
The Havwoods team are proud of their new showroom. Open and airy with its large street-facing window, it continues to attract curious off-street visitors. Havwoods ’ senior management team commented that the Sydney showroom is the perfect combination of local character and detail with their premium global brand.
