New Zealand, Christchurch
When relocating their Christchurch office to the city centre, Simpson Grierson approached Unispace as they wanted to work with like-minded people – experts who offer practical advice in plain English.
Simpson Grierson is one of the leading and largest commercial law firms in New Zealand. While their new riverside location offered sought after benefits like natural light and treetop views, it also came with some design challenges. The wavy glass façade is supported by large columns set back in the floor plate, which complicates the use of the space around the edge of the floor. Our design solution flipped this into a positive by filling these irregular spaces with open plan desks, allowing the light and views to be shared by all.
Five individual offices are contained in the core of the building, so the shared spaces like the boardroom and café take full advantage of the river outlook.
The reception area creates a strong first impression with the ceiling’s timber feature and local artwork. Clever sliding doors on the boardroom open it seamlessly into the reception, to create a client function space with the desk doubling as a bar.
We were initially appointed for the strategy and design, however, the client soon saw the benefit of keeping the construction within the one team. This decision paid dividends when the construction phase met the short time frames driven by Simpson Grierson’s current lease expiry. We ran a competitive tender phase, established a fixed cost price and the construction ran ahead of time, completed in nine weeks thanks to our Think Create Make methodology.
