A national workplace strategy, including design and delivery of three key sites, for fast growing legal and professional services firm, HPX Group
An AFR Fast 100 company with lease expiries approaching across Australia, HPX Group took the opportunity to uniquely recreate their workplaces for their employees and clients
HPX Group brings together Hamilton Locke, Source, Helios Salinger and Materra to provide exceptional legal, governance, risk, compliance and privacy services. As one of Australia's fastest-growing legal and professional services firms, HPX Group has emerged as beacon of success and innovation in Australia’s competitive legal landscape and were recently named in the AFR Fast 100 companies, for the second year in a row.
With lease expiries approaching on three key office locations across Australia, and having (unsurprisingly) outgrown their existing sites, HPX Group chose to adopt a national strategic approach to their workplaces. As with everything HPX Group does, the people and client experience were key, with an important objective being the attraction and retention of key talent across all sites. The business already benefited from a strong and dynamic culture, but they lacked spaces that supported and enabled their teams, allowed for growth and authentically reflected the brand.
As a result, HPX Group were looking for a trusted and reliable end-to-end partner to lead the charge and set a new standard for their workplaces nationally. Unispace were thrilled to be appointed as their chosen partner to provide Strategy, Design and Construction for the national approach, kicking off with three of their sites in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.
Appointed ahead of site selection, our team was able to provide strategic support through a comprehensive building due diligence process across Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney. We assessed space requirements, analysed floor plates, compared building amenities and locations, evaluated fitout costs and programme implications, and completed test fits for the top three shortlisted sites in each market.
This early involvement enabled HPX Group to make informed, data-driven decisions - avoiding spaces with hidden service limitations, negotiating stronger landlord incentives, and reducing long-term occupancy costs. The result was the successful negotiation of leases in high-performing, A-Grade buildings in premium, central locations, ensuring the spaces were not only fit for purpose from day one, but future-ready as the business continues to grow.
A story of unity and cohesion
Once the three new sites were selected, the national workplace strategy kicked off with interviews with leadership visioning sessions, functional interviews with employee group representatives and an all-staff survey.
The challenge lay in creating a national workplace strategy that could support HPX Group’s growth while establishing a more cohesive and connected experience across three distinct business groups, each with different levels of flexibility and ways of working. This wasn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; the strategy needed to empower individuals within each group to work in the way that suited them best, while still uniting everyone under a consistent and authentic HPX brand experience.
Equally important was creating spaces that welcomed clients into the heart of the HPX culture. The new environments needed to reflect the professionalism, energy, and ambition of the brand —offering a seamless, engaging experience that made clients feel at ease and part of something dynamic. With these goals in mind, HPX Group set out to shape workplaces that would attract and retain top talent while fostering meaningful, in-person connections with clients across Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.
From exploring the HPX Group business in great detail, our strategy team unearthed five key objectives HPX Group were looking for in their new workplaces. Establishing these objectives during the workplace strategy study was beneficial for shaping the design for the new spaces, ensuring they enabled HPX Group’s people and businesses to succeed.
An urban-inspired design, enabling connection and flexibility for future growth
HPX Group wanted a design that could be rolled out nationally across their new workplaces in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and later this year in Melbourne. The design needed to accommodate their rapid growth, while staying true to their brand identity. People, growth, and culture became the core design principles, shaping a concept inspired by cities—their constant evolution, dynamic energy, and ability to adapt. This urban-inspired approach seamlessly integrates flexibility, innovation and connection, ensuring the spaces evolve alongside the company's ambitious trajectory.
The look and feel draws from the essence of the cities. In the case of their HQ in Sydney, this meant balancing the industrial roots with natural elements. A simplified palette of black, deep blues, metal, and glass forms the foundation of the Sydney space. In Perth, our Design team aimed to balance the industrial nature of the city with the red earthy tones of the WA outback. A simplified palette of burgundy, black, metal, and glass was selected to set the foundation. While warm timbers and raw steel finishes add depth and authenticity throughout the Perth space. Up in Brisbane, a colour palette comprising mainly of green was used throughout the space as a nod to the lush greenery of the tropical Brisbane landscape complemented with timber tones.
A defining feature across all three locations is the open-plan reception and breakout areas, designed for internal and external gatherings and events. These vibrant spaces offer a variety of seating areas for impromptu meetings, casual work, or moments of pause. Art also plays a key role in the experience across all three sites, with striking custom designed pieces at the entrance of each location. Sightlines and views were also a key consideration in the designs. Sydney looks over Sydney Harbour and out towards the heads of Sydney, Brisbane is treated to 180-degree views of the snaking Brisbane River and Storey Bridge, while Perth has views of the water and city.
Three projects delivered consistently and concurrently in three locations nationally in three months
Given the scale, complexities and concurrent timing of the projects, we resourced the project by providing several team members from Strategy, Design and Construction who sat across the projects at a national level. They were then supported by local people, on the ground in each location. This ensured a consistent team and consistent points of contact for HPX Group for each of our key services, particularly throughout the months of delivery across the three sites.
From a technology and AV perspective, HPX Group were seeking a consistent and seamless user experience across their offices. They wanted to ensure the same AV and IT requirements, including the systems and functionality, were implemented nationally. We partnered with national AV consultants to work side by side with us on the planning and execution of this component, including regular project coordination sessions to ensure programme, design and delivery were seamless, and most importantly the client’s expectations were met.
A similar approach was needed for their security system and access cards. Access cards needed to link to a universal central hub, while still accessing individual tenancies. Our Project Management team worked closely with the landlords and building management in each new location to ensure this was achieved and maintained on an ongoing basis.
The feedback from HPX Group on the new sites has been incredibly positive. The client has observed increased engagement and collaboration, and they’re seeing more people wanting to come into the office, not only because they have a desk, but because the workplace supports and connects the broader business and is authentic to who HPX Group are.
