The Majestic Centre
A refurbishment for one of Wellington’s most iconic post-modernist buildings, Majestic Centre.
Originally constructed in 1991, The Majestic Centre remains the tallest building in Wellington. After the building’s recent acquisition by Australian-based property investment firm, Charter Hall, a refurbishment of the lobby and end-of-trip facilities was initiated to modernise the building and ensure a high-quality amenity offering, to continue to attract and retain tenants in Wellington city.
The restoration project focused on upgrading and modernizing while accentuating the building’s post-modern heritage. A key consideration is the indoor-outdoor transition. The design encourages pedestrians to stay and use the space, providing a sheltered passage and transit route in a city that experiences harsher winds and weather than most.
Biophilic elements are a key part of the design to elevate the user experience and journey, bringing the outside in. We worked closely with interior plantscape specialist, Greenair, to incorporate 40 individual gardens with lush, New Zealand native greenery.
The end of trip facilities are extensive and one of the best offerings in Wellington city. These include female and male showers, lockers and bathrooms, bike, e-bike and scooter parking, providing alternative transport options for tenants. Additionally, the fully refurbished central atrium space and new café offering provides a more fit-for-purpose experience for tenants.
The construction programme was complex with significant demolition works involved. The Wellington-based Unispace design and construction team achieved outstanding results for Charter Hall, including on-time and on-budget delivery.
