A Purpose-Built Workplace Designed for Performance and Flexibility
When Smith+Nephew (S+N) set out to establish a new workplace, the objective was to create an environment that could support specialised training and laboratory functions while addressing the functional limitations of their existing office. The new space needed to balance client-facing activities with back-of-house operations, improve privacy and acoustics, and provide flexibility for future growth—while reflecting the organisation’s evolving brand identity.
Working in close partnership with Unispace, the project followed a strategic and collaborative planning process. Understanding how visitors, doctors, and staff move through and use the space on a daily basis was central to shaping a workplace that feels intuitive, efficient, and adaptable.
Strategic zoning to support privacy, flow, and access to daylight
A key outcome of the planning process was the clear zoning of client-facing areas, training and dry lab spaces, and office functions. Multiple layout options were explored and refined to ensure appropriate separation between public and private zones, while maintaining efficient circulation throughout the workplace.
The final layout positions training and dry lab spaces to one side of the floorplate, with shared facilities centrally located. Director offices act as a buffer between front-of-house and back-of-house areas, enhancing privacy and reducing visual and acoustic disruption. Meeting rooms are located along the window line, providing comfortable, naturally lit environments for longer-duration use and improving overall space efficiency.
This approach creates a balanced workplace that supports focused work, confidential discussions, and collaboration, while allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the open office.
A welcoming front-of-house and flexible workplace experience
The front-of-house was designed as a bespoke feature area that establishes a strong first impression for visitors. A refined, monotone palette is complemented by warm timber finishes at the central check-in, lounge, and breakout areas, creating a welcoming and professional environment aligned with the client’s brand.
Throughout the workplace, flexible furniture systems and adaptable spaces support a range of activities—from training sessions and collaborative workshops to informal meetings and everyday work. Breakout and training areas can be easily reconfigured, enabling the workplace to evolve as needs change.
Designed for longevity and future growth
Sustainability considerations were embedded throughout the design, including energy-efficient lighting, low-VOC finishes, locally sourced materials, and maximised access to natural daylight. These strategies contribute to a healthier, more sustainable workplace while supporting long-term performance.
The completed workplace successfully supports S+N’s business objectives by providing clear zoning, intuitive circulation, and improved privacy across all areas. A variety of work settings and collaboration spaces enhance staff choice, support different workflows, and enable future expansion as the organisation continues to grow.
The result is a thoughtfully designed, future-ready workplace that enhances productivity, collaboration, and day-to-day experience—while remaining adaptable to the organisation’s evolving needs.
