Art for Impact: Where Craft, Culture and Community Come Together at Unispace Bangalore Studio
Discover how Unispace Bangalore Studio brings Karnataka's rich cultural heritage to life through traditional craftsmanship, artistic storytelling and meaningful collaborations.
Art has the power to do more than enhance a space. It can tell stories, preserve cultural traditions, connect communities and bring a deeper sense of meaning to the places we inhabit.
At Unispace, this belief is at the heart of our Art for Impact initiative, which recognises the role that art can play in creating positive social impact and stronger connections between workplaces and their surrounding communities.
Our new Bangalore Studio brings this philosophy to life by weaving traditional craftsmanship, locally inspired artwork and cultural storytelling into the workplace experience. More than decorative elements, these artistic expressions celebrate the people, landscapes and traditions that shape Karnataka, while creating opportunities for artisans to contribute their skills and perspectives to a contemporary workplace.
Bringing Karnataka's Stories to Life Through Art
From the misty hills of Coorg and the forests of Bandipur to the historic landscapes of Hampi and the vibrant streets of Bangalore, Karnataka's rich natural and cultural heritage provides endless inspiration for artistic expression.
At Unispace Bangalore Studio, this diversity comes to life through Where Karnataka's Landscapes Meet the City's First Light, an artistic concept that celebrates the connection between the state's natural landscapes and the everyday energy of its cities.
Working with Shreya Pranit, Creative Director and Founder of Malava Hands Co., Unispace explored how traditional craftsmanship and locally inspired details could bring a distinct sense of place into a contemporary workplace. Rooted in an appreciation for nature, cultural heritage and the skills of Indian artisans, Shreya's creative approach focuses on transforming familiar materials and cultural references into meaningful artistic expressions.
The inspiration for the concept emerged from an everyday scene at Bangalore's iconic KR Market, where colourful flower baskets, or tokris, are arranged in organic compositions, creating a vibrant interplay of colour, texture and form.
"This idea came to me when I was in KR Market one day. There are these flower tokris arranged in a very organic composition," Shreya recalls.
This simple observation became a creative starting point for interpreting Bangalore's character within the Studio. Rather than recreating these scenes literally, the design draws on their textures, forms and cultural significance, translating them into contemporary artistic installations.
Through natural materials, intricate craftsmanship and subtle handcrafted details, the Studio tells a layered story of Karnataka, one that celebrates its landscapes, honours its cultural traditions and reflects the people who bring the region to life.

Celebrating the Hands Behind the Craft
At the heart of Art for Impact is the belief that craftsmanship carries stories, and that the people behind each creation are as important as the finished work.
For the Bangalore Studio, Unispace collaborated with artisans and makers to integrate traditional craft techniques into a contemporary setting, creating a meaningful connection between cultural heritage and modern workplace design.
One of the Studio's distinctive installations, Contours of Many Hands, brings together multiple craft traditions to tell a single, layered story. Textile forms the foundation of the artwork, abstractly representing Karnataka's varied terrains, from water bodies and plains to dense, undulating landscapes.
These geographical shifts are expressed through different embroidery techniques, carefully executed by kashidakars, or traditional embroiderers, from Lucknow. Each stitch adds texture and depth, translating the landscape into a tactile artistic expression while celebrating the skills and contributions of the artisans involved.
Elsewhere, suspended installations crafted from banana fibre were created in collaboration with women-led artisan groups. These pieces introduce natural materials and organic forms into the workplace, demonstrating how traditional craft can be reinterpreted through contemporary design.
A hand-knotted installation inspired by Karnataka's flora and fauna flows through the ceiling like a continuous ribbon, bringing softness, movement and a sense of rhythm into the Studio. Its intricate woven forms create a tactile connection to nature while contrasting with the structured architectural environment.
Even the smallest details carry meaning. Delicate metal insects, handcrafted from scrap brass by a lohar, or traditional metalworker, from Kishangarh, transform discarded materials into intricate pieces of art. These elements celebrate traditional metalworking skills while demonstrating the creative possibilities of material reuse.
Together, these installations bring different craft traditions, materials and artistic perspectives into one cohesive workplace narrative, celebrating the many hands and stories behind their creation.

Creating Impact Beyond Aesthetics
Art for Impact goes beyond the visual qualities of an installation. It considers how art can create meaningful connections between people, communities and the environments they inhabit.
By involving artisans and makers in the creation of the Bangalore Studio, Unispace brings traditional skills and cultural knowledge into the workplace, providing a platform for craftsmanship to be appreciated in a new context.
This collaborative approach reflects a broader commitment to Designing Beyond Ourselves, a philosophy that recognises how design decisions can influence people, communities and environments beyond the immediate space.
Rather than treating art as a finishing touch, the Studio integrates craftsmanship into its design narrative from the outset. Each installation represents an opportunity to celebrate creative traditions, explore thoughtful material choices and acknowledge the people whose expertise brings these works to life.
The use of banana fibre, textiles and reclaimed brass also highlights how traditional materials and techniques can contribute to resource-conscious design, demonstrating that creativity and environmental consideration can work hand in hand.
Through these collaborations, art becomes more than something to admire. It becomes a medium for storytelling, cultural appreciation and meaningful engagement.

A Workplace Rooted in People and Place
The integration of art and craftsmanship plays an important role in shaping the identity of Unispace Bangalore Studio.
Designed as a living showroom for our Strategy, Design and Delivery capabilities, the Studio brings together contemporary workplace design with a distinctly local expression.
Throughout the space, handcrafted installations introduce warmth, texture and cultural character, creating moments of discovery and connection within the everyday workplace experience.
For employees, these elements contribute to an environment that feels welcoming, inspiring and rooted in its surroundings. For clients and visitors, they offer an opportunity to experience Karnataka's cultural richness through the lens of contemporary design.
The artwork also creates natural opportunities for conversation, encouraging people to engage with the stories, materials and craftsmanship behind each piece.
By connecting global design thinking with local artistic traditions, the Bangalore Studio demonstrates how workplaces can reflect the communities and cultures in which they are located, creating environments that are both purposeful and meaningful.

Designing with Purpose, Creating Lasting Connections
Unispace Bangalore Studio is a celebration of what becomes possible when art, craft and workplace design come together with a shared purpose.
From the colourful flower baskets of KR Market to the intricate embroidery, woven installations and handcrafted metal details, every element contributes to a story shaped by Karnataka's landscapes, cultural traditions and the creativity of its people.
Through Art for Impact, Unispace continues to explore how design can extend beyond aesthetics to celebrate craftsmanship, foster connections and bring cultural stories into the spaces where we work.
The Bangalore Studio is a reflection of this ambition, a place where global design expertise meets local creativity, and where traditional craft finds new expression in a contemporary workplace.
Because meaningful design is not just about the spaces we create, but also about the people, cultures and communities we connect along the way.
