Tonkin + Taylor
Working in partnership with Tonkin + Taylor since 2017, Unispace designs and delivers sustainable, fit-for-purpose workplaces that fulfill their purpose to create a better world.
Tonkin + Taylor are a leading environmental and engineering consultancy with operations across Australia and New Zealand. Unispace’s journey with Tonkin + Taylor started with their Christchurch workplace in 2017 and has led to several fit-outs across New Zealand, including the national roll-out of Tonkin + Taylor’s Greenstar targets.
Part of Tonkin + Taylor’s national strategy is for all workplaces to achieve a 6 star Greenstar accreditation. The Auckland CBD HQ was the first in New Zealand to achieve a 6 Greenstar Interior rating – the highest possible rating given by the New Zealand Green Building Council. Tonkin + Taylor’s recent Wellington and Christchurch workplaces are currently in the process of targeting the same accreditation.
To achieve a 6 Greenstar rating, a sustainable design and build best practice approach is required, along with a fully independent assessment to verify compliance by the building council.
Sourcing sustainable, low-toxic materials, improving the indoor environment quality, reusing existing furniture and selecting energy-efficient WELS rated appliances were key considerations and practices to ensure Greenstar targets are met across all projects.
Rigorous waste management processes throughout construction ensured that waste was disposed of correctly and diverted from landfill where possible - resulting in a 73.7% waste diversion rate for the Auckland CBD project.
The wellbeing and health of Tonkin + Taylor’s staff is a key priority, each workplace design ensures there are spaces to recharge, socialize and connect with colleagues. Tonkin + Taylor encourages sustainable modes of transport, ensuring there are suitable end-of-trip services – lockers, bike racks and EV charging stations.
All projects for Tonkin + Taylor to date have been delivered on-time and on-budget.
