Bridging Generations: How Flexible Workplaces Unlock Team Success

Abi Roni Mattom, Country Director at Unispace India, highlights the importance of flexible workspaces in unlocking multigenerational team success in the latest article for People Matters.

The workplace as we know it is transforming, and the demands of a multigenerational workforce are pushing organizations to rethink how they design and utilize their office spaces. Insights from Unispace’s latest global workplace insights report, From Restrictions to Resilience, underlines the critical role of flexible work environments in meeting the diverse needs of today’s employees.

Why flexibility matters more than ever

With five generations now coexisting in the workplace, each group brings distinct preferences and expectations. Younger employees (under 34) prioritize work-life balance, wellness, and flexibility. According to the report, 33% of these employees cite the absence of designated relaxation spaces as a significant challenge. Furthermore, 80% value access to amenities such as on-site childcare or pet care, while 88% appreciate policies that include flexible hours and subsidized travel options.

Meanwhile, older employees (aged 55 and above) are more accustomed to traditional office layouts, with 34% reporting no significant barriers to working from the office. This group also places a higher emphasis on face-to-face collaboration and finds it easier to navigate structured office environments.

Designing workspaces for every generation

To bridge these generational divides, flexibility in both workplace design and policy is essential. Our research indicates a generational split in office attendance, with younger employees preferring an average of 2.7 days a week in the office compared to 3.7 days for older colleagues.

Adopting a human-centric design approach is key. Flexible spaces that cater to relaxation, collaboration, and focused work enable organizations to support a diverse workforce effectively. These spaces should also integrate technology and sustainability to ensure long-term relevance and inclusivity.
