Delivering a high-tech Academy that facilitates the first evolution in technology advancement of patient care.
Following their successful workplace and lab transformation project in 2019, Smith & Nephew called upon Unispace once again to help them achieve their expansion plans for a technology-led learning and development space, called The Academy.
Supporting their transformation from a medical device organization to a medical technology innovator, this space needed to attract healthcare customers from all over the world to learn how to effectively incorporate robotics into their practices.
Powered by their three pillars: education, innovation and excellence; Smith & Nephew were motivated to redefine the way that medical education is delivered to their customers in the Asia Pacific region.
However, several obstacles presented themselves throughout the course of the project.
Technical delivery challenges overcome through exceptional communication.
Due to the mid-pandemic timing of this project's design and construction phases, the Unispace team was required to manage the program flexibly to allow for delivery delays for the specialized audio-visual and medical equipment.
The interior design of The Academy was inspired by Smith & Nephew’s brand promise of “Life Unlimited” and Singapore’s urban landscape of a garden city. The warm, welcoming tones and custom-designed pieces of the physical interior design ideally complement the digital integrations.
Unispace’s construction team overcame specific, technical challenges through methodical communication and collaborative problem-solving with Smith & Nephew, while also managing through Covid-related site restrictions and supply delays. These technical challenges ranged from the requirement of additional electrical voltage beyond what the base building provided, and the need to design into the space extra hot water tanks and a biowaste dilution tank.

After years of conducting workshops and training in external venues, Smith & Nephew has now realized a future-proofed learning and development hub for the Asia Pacific region where customers receive an exceptional and memorable training experience.
The impressive features of this site include a virtual reality simulation room, a virtual OR room, a large training auditorium, a video studio production room, a wet lab predominantly used for practical training on cadavers, plus a large customer lounge, two large meeting rooms and small quiet areas for focused work.
With our Design and Construction teams working in a unified manner, Smith & Nephew enjoyed a streamlined construction program despite the external pressures.
